Well, this is a really simple way to understand and identify idols in our lives. It’s the temptations that threaten our relationship with God. They are there to undermine us.
I Corinthians 10:13b-14
. . . he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so that you can stand up under it. Therefore, my dear friends, flee from idolatry.
I think I always thought of temptations that were simply bad for me: drugs, alcohol, etc. But I understand now that the beginnings of these things, the part that starts in the mind, is where the idol begins to gain foothold.
How often are we tempted through the day? How many choices do we have to make? All the little temptations add up and soon we are acting on them.
